Hyundai Steel Restores Normal Operations at Hot Rolling Mill After One Month
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hyundai Steel will fully resume operations at the Dangjin Steelworks' 1st Hot Rolling Mill after a month. This is expected to ease the shortage of hot-rolled steel sheets supply.
According to the steel industry on the 11th, the Ministry of Employment and Labor's Work Suspension Review Committee lifted the work suspension order on the 1st Hot Rolling Mill at Hyundai Steel's Dangjin Steelworks the day before.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor issued a work suspension order on the 1st Hot Rolling Mill and the Rebar Plant on the 8th of last month after a worker in his 40s died in an accident at the 1st Hot Rolling Mill. The suspension order on the Rebar Plant was lifted on the 27th of last month, but the 1st Hot Rolling Mill remained shut down for over a month.
The 1st Hot Rolling Mill produces 11,000 tons per day and 3.3 million tons annually of hot-rolled steel sheets. Hot-rolled steel sheets are steel materials used in automobiles, home appliances, and other industries, and demand from upstream industries has surged visibly this year with economic recovery. However, the suspension of the 1st Hot Rolling Mill caused a supply shortage as about 10% of the annual production volume was lost.
