Korea-US Deputy Foreign Ministers' Meeting... "Swift Implementation of Summit Follow-ups on Vaccines and Advanced Technologies" (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Choi Jong-geon, the First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is visiting the United States, announced on the 9th (local time) that through a meeting with Wendy Sherman, Deputy Secretary of State, they have laid the groundwork to swiftly implement the follow-up measures of the Korea-US summit. Vice Minister Choi also extended an invitation to Deputy Secretary Sherman to visit Korea.
After a 70-minute meeting with Deputy Secretary Sherman, Vice Minister Choi said at a press briefing, "It is an important time to ensure that the substantial achievements of the summit visit to the US continue through prompt follow-up actions."
He added, "We agreed that the recent Korea-US summit achieved more comprehensive and meaningful results than ever before," and explained, "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Department decided to accelerate efforts to ensure practical follow-up measures." He also mentioned that they agreed on close cooperation between Korea and the US to resume substantive dialogue with North Korea.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated in a press release that the two vice ministers broadly discussed follow-up measures to the summit, bilateral issues, and mutual interests including the Korean Peninsula, regional, and global matters.
The two vice ministers agreed to promptly and smoothly implement various follow-up measures from the summit, including cooperation in vaccines, advanced technology and supply chains, and collaboration with ASEAN and Northern Central American countries. They also shared the view that continuous diplomacy and dialogue are essential to achieve the goal of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of lasting peace.
Regarding the Myanmar situation, the two vice ministers condemned the violence by Myanmar’s military and police against civilians, emphasized the immediate cessation of violence, the release of detainees, and the international community’s efforts for the swift restoration of democracy. Deputy Secretary Sherman explained the consultations held during her recent Southeast Asia tour related to the Myanmar issue.

The two vice ministers reaffirmed the importance of trilateral cooperation among Korea, the US, and Japan, and agreed to further activate face-to-face consultations at various levels between Korea and the US in the future. Vice Minister Choi also invited Deputy Secretary Sherman to visit Korea.
