About 40 people, including Chairman Kim Cheong-ryong, executives and members of Mokpo Fisheries Cooperative, and fisheries-related personnel, attended the fish seed release event held in compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, releasing approximately 73,000 juvenile black porgies (Gamseongdom) into the North Port area.
The ‘Creating a Sea of Hope Movement’ is held annually with the intention of protecting fishery resources and enhancing marine resources amid the continuous decline in coastal production caused by environmental damage to the sea and habitat destruction due to various development activities and marine litter dumping. It is a movement initiated to promote comprehensive and systematic marine environmental conservation activities centered on fisheries cooperatives and fishermen to create a hopeful sea.
The juvenile black porgies released at this event had grown for a certain period after hatching and were over 5 cm in size, which increases their survival rate in the natural ecosystem, and are expected to greatly contribute to the restoration of resources along the Mokpo coast.
Chairman Kim Cheong-ryong said, “The juvenile black porgies released this time have a high survival rate and are high value-added species with high consumption. When they mature, the increase in catch volume will greatly help fishermen,” adding, “We will continue to raise awareness of the importance of coastal resource restoration and do our best to increase fishermen’s income.”
