View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Kim Mi-kyung, the mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, visited the ‘Ice Pack Reuse Challenge’ workshop located in Daejo-dong on the 4th.
This place was used as a senior citizens' center until February last year but was left as an idle space. In April of this year, it was renewed as a workspace for reusing ice packs.
The Ice Pack Reuse Challenge is a project that collects ice packs from apartment complexes, cleans, disinfects, and packages them, and delivers them to stores such as traditional markets. By May, about 2,000 ice packs were delivered to 28 stores, gaining great response from apartment residents and small business owners.
Currently, the amount needed by stores is less than the collected amount, but it is expected that more stores will require ice packs during the peak summer season. In June, through an agreement with the Korea Environment Corporation, additional large-scale demand sources will be discovered.
This project is carried out through interdepartmental cooperation with the purpose of enhancing community awareness among residents, creating jobs for the elderly, and jointly overcoming environmental issues. Ten elderly participants are involved, and the mayor of Eunpyeong-gu encouraged the seniors by working together on cleaning and disinfecting tasks on that day.
In particular, Mayor Kim emphasized once again the importance of environmental protection in celebration of World Environment Day on June 5th.
One participating senior said, “Counting ice packs while working helps prevent dementia, and I enjoy working because I can meet many friends.”

In response, Kim Mi-kyung, mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, said, “We will strive to create more quality jobs that allow more seniors who are still at home to participate.”
