NongHyup Financial Group Focuses Carbon Neutrality Activities Starting with Employees
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] NongHyup Financial Group announced on the 2nd that it will intensively carry out 'carbon reduction' activities throughout June as part of NongHyup Financial's 'Let's Try ESG (Environment, Social, Governance)' campaign in celebration of World Environment Day (June 5).
Since the beginning of this year, NongHyup Financial has been conducting the 'Let's Try ESG' campaign, encouraging employees to practice eco-friendly ESG activities in their daily lives and carrying out various initiatives. In June, the campaign will be upgraded to align with World Environment Day. The existing 'Let's Try Day' will be changed to 'Let's Try Week' to extend the focused promotion period, and the scope of eco-friendly activities will be broadened by introducing campaigns that employees can participate in not only at work but also at home, encouraging wider involvement.
First, in line with the government's 2050 carbon neutrality policy and the eco-friendly era, employees will be encouraged to participate in the 'Carbon Point System' led by the Ministry of Environment. This program allows employees to reduce greenhouse gases at their individual households, and information on how to join the campaign and details of the activities will be promoted through the internal company system.
Additionally, related to NongHyup Bank's signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Environment Corporation last May to jointly promote greenhouse gas reduction, this campaign will serve as an opportunity to expand low-carbon environmental policy activities at the group level. Furthermore, customers will be informed about the 'Carbon Point System' through ATMs, and various financial benefits such as preferential interest rates on loan and deposit products will be offered upon joining the Carbon Point System to increase customer participation.
Moreover, the ESG practice activities previously conducted by NongHyup Financial will be expanded into a campaign involving all employees of the NongHyup Federation in collaboration with the NongHyup Central Association. A common ESG practice theme will be selected and implemented at the federation level. This month’s common theme is 'No Leftover Food,' and banners will be installed at the entrances of cafeterias operated by affiliated companies, with daily leftover food amounts posted to encourage employees to avoid leaving food waste.

'No Leftover Food' is directly linked to carbon reduction activities. Recently, an environmental organization announced that if one person reduces their food waste by 20%, it is equivalent to planting 5.5 trees annually in terms of greenhouse gas reduction effects.
