[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] The Democratic Party of Korea welcomed the results of the South Korea-US summit, particularly regarding North Korea, evaluating that "the United States accepted South Korea's position."
Ko Yong-jin, the senior spokesperson for the Democratic Party, said in a briefing on the 22nd, "We welcome the successful conclusion of the first summit between President Moon Jae-in and US President Joe Biden," adding, "The two leaders' no-mask appearance and blue ties symbolized their commitment to ending COVID-19 and the strong alliance between the two countries."
He continued, "The agreement between the two leaders on the goal of complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the decision to continue the achievements of the 2018 Panmunjom Declaration and the North Korea-US Singapore Summit is an acceptance of South Korea's position by the United States and is the fruit of diplomatic efforts."
Spokesperson Ko stated, "In particular, the appointment of Sung Kim as the US Special Representative for North Korea, who is well-versed in Korean Peninsula issues, reflects the US's determination to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, which we warmly welcome, and we expect practical and close cooperation between the two countries for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."
He also highly evaluated vaccine cooperation. Spokesperson Ko said, "The alliance-level direct COVID-19 vaccine support for the South Korean and US armed forces, and the ‘comprehensive partnership’ combining US vaccine core technology with South Korea's bio-production capabilities, will become a model of global cooperation that will accelerate the end of COVID-19 not only in South Korea but also in the Indo-Pacific region."
He assessed the cooperation between the two countries in the fields of 6G, semiconductors, and electric vehicle batteries, as well as South Korea's investment in the US, as "a bright green light for our economy," and also praised the diplomatic authorities for their efforts in achieving the conclusion of the 42-year-old South Korea-US missile guidelines and joint overseas nuclear power plant ventures.
