Recruiting Teams for the 5th AI Grand Challenge to Solve Math Problems
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will recruit teams for the first stage of the 5th ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) Grand Challenge,’ themed ‘Solve the given math problems using AI technology,’ from May 17 to June 15.
The AI Grand Challenge competition is a challenge and competitive research and development (R&D) contest where participants compete based on voluntary preliminary research conducted to solve the presented problems. It departs from the traditional evaluation method focused on reviewing business plans and selects research institutions solely based on research capabilities.
This 5th competition will be conducted over two years until 2022 in three stages to secure foundational technologies that can be used to solve fundamental scientific problems and for automatic coding based on human commands. The first stage, marking the beginning of this process, poses the problem: ‘Present the solution process and answer for descriptive math problems composed in text!’ The entire competition is managed by the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI).
Participants can submit their intention to participate during the first stage recruitment period from May 17 to June 15 via the official website (www.ai-challenge.kr), and conduct voluntary preliminary research based on the announced detailed problem definitions and sample data by type.
AI models developed through preliminary research should be submitted to the first stage competition held online from June 16 to 18. After scoring and reproducibility verification, the final rankings will be announced on June 30. Based on the competition results, the top 20 teams will receive follow-up research funding of up to KRW 237 million per team (totaling approximately KRW 4.75 billion) to prepare for the second stage competition.
The second stage competition, along with the existing 3rd and 4th competitions (third stage), is scheduled to be held in November this year. Participation opportunities will be open at every stage, including the second stage, allowing new participants to challenge the competition.
Song Kyung-hee, Director of AI-based Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, emphasized, “We aim to secure advanced AI technology capable of comprehensively understanding and judging mathematical logical structures, and provide an opportunity for AI researchers to grow further through healthy competition, thereby revitalizing the research ecosystem.”
