LANXESS Launches Battery Material Business... Starts Battery Electrolyte Production in Germany
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Global specialty chemicals company LANXESS is making a full-scale entry into the battery materials industry through collaboration with Tinci, a world-leading lithium-ion battery materials manufacturer based in China.
LANXESS announced on the 12th that starting next year, it will produce lithium-ion battery electrolyte formulations at its Leverkusen plant in Germany in partnership with Tinci. Tinci is a world-leading manufacturer of conductive salts and electrolytes. Currently, it operates three electrolyte production facilities in China and is expanding by adding three more.
Electrolyte is a substance that enables the movement of lithium ions within lithium-ion battery cells and is one of the core components. Tinci plans to establish itself as a local supplier to battery cell manufacturers in the European region based on the high-performance electrolytes produced by LANXESS.
Dr. Arno Bockowski, Member of the Board of Management at LANXESS, stated, "With the acceleration of e-mobility growth, the construction of new battery cell production facilities in Europe is rapidly increasing. The current growth in the battery market presents a significant opportunity for LANXESS, which has been producing raw materials necessary for battery production. This collaboration will serve as an important stepping stone for LANXESS to expand its position in the battery materials market."
