Seocho-gu to Provide Free Glasses to Over 200 Vulnerable Individuals
‘Agreement with Local Opticians’, Free Eyeglasses Support Project for Over 200 Low-Income Households Starting in May... Monthly Recruitment and Selection of 25 Beneficiaries via Resident Community Centers from May to December
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seocho-gu (Mayor Eunhee Jo) is partnering with local opticians to provide free glasses to over 200 low-income households in urgent need of vision correction, aiming to protect their eyesight and promote proper eye care.
Currently, many neighbors around us face difficulties in proper eye care due to worsening vision caused by delayed vision correction from financial hardship or the use of unsuitable magnifying glasses that do not match their individual eyesight.
Accordingly, starting in May, the district plans to offer free vision tests and glasses (including magnifying glasses) to more than 200 low-income households requiring new glasses or magnifiers due to vision decline.
This free glasses support project is made possible through donations for helping neighbors and sponsorship from local opticians. From May to December, over a total of eight months, 25 recipients will be recruited and selected each month through the local community service centers in their residential areas.
Eligibility for support includes basic livelihood security recipients and lower-income students in elementary, middle, and high school, as well as seniors aged 65 and older residing in the district.
Selected recipients must visit the designated optician with a confirmation certificate issued within one month and, after an eye examination, either replace their glasses or have new ones made according to their vision.
The representative of a contracted optician who contacted Seocho-gu first to practice sharing for neighbors in need said, “I have often seen vulnerable children and seniors miss the opportunity to wear glasses due to economic reasons, resulting in vision deterioration. I want to continue participating in the free glasses support project with Seocho-gu.”
