LG Energy Solution Intensifies Battery Business Discussions with Indonesia
LG Energy Solution Signs HoA with Indonesian Battery JV (IBI)
Negotiations Intensify on Nickel Mining and Battery Production Plant
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] LG Energy Solution (LGES) is discussing detailed conditions for investment with the Indonesian state-owned battery joint venture (IBI). This is a follow-up discussion to the 'Battery Industry Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)' signed with the Indonesian Ministry of Investment last December.
According to industry sources on the 7th, the LGES consortium signed a Heads of Agreement (HoA) with IBI, the battery joint venture of Indonesian state-owned enterprises, on the 29th of last month.
Previously, LGES formed a consortium with LG Chem, LG International, POSCO, and Huayou Holding, China's largest cobalt and battery material producer, to invest in Indonesia's battery industry. IBI is a joint venture established by four Indonesian state-owned companies?Asahan Aluminum (state-owned aluminum company), Aneka Tambang Tbk (state-owned mining company), Pertamina (state-owned oil company), and the Indonesian Electricity Company?each holding a 25% stake for the battery industry.
According to this Heads of Agreement, the LGES consortium will discuss specific investment conditions with the Indonesian side. Indonesia, a producer of battery raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese, has set a goal to become an 'electric vehicle industry hub' by 2030. To this end, the Indonesian government has been actively attracting investment to encourage global battery companies to partner with Indonesian nickel mines and produce batteries for electric vehicles.
In this regard, South Korea is discussing investments in three sectors: ▲battery industry (LGES consortium) ▲local battery cell factory (LGES-Hyundai Motor) ▲electric vehicle production (Hyundai Motor).
LGES is reported to have negotiated a 'package deal' covering everything from nickel mining operations in North Maluku, Indonesia, to refining industries and electric vehicle battery production plants.
