Gwangju Office of Education Promotes 'Conversion of School Sports Teams to Specialized Sports Clubs'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 18th that it recently held a "Public Hearing for the Transition of School Sports Teams to Professional Sports Clubs."
Under the slogan "Dreaming Student Athletes, School Sports Teams Realizing Dreams," this public hearing was organized to operate the student athlete development system in a dual structure of school sports teams and professional sports clubs.
Recently, social calls for changes in the operation system of school sports teams have increased due to Me Too incidents of school violence in the sports world.
Additionally, due to the decline in the school-age population, many opinions suggested expanding the operation beyond the school's boundaries to work together with the local community to revitalize school sports teams in individual schools facing difficulties in securing student athletes.
At this public hearing, Kim Geon-woo, a teacher at Wolgok Elementary School, gave a case-centered presentation on the difficulties of selecting student athletes for school sports teams to school officials and parents involved in baseball and soccer.
Yu Gyeong-jae, a supervisor from the Jeonbuk Office of Education, explained the advantages and disadvantages of transitioning to sports clubs, and Kim Seok-hwan, director of the Gwangju Sports Science Institute, discussed the future direction in which school sports team operations should be transformed.
There was also a time for free Q&A and discussion between the presenters and attendees.
