One Year of the COVID-19 Pandemic... Over 3 Million Deaths Worldwide
The United States, Brazil, and Mexico Have the Highest Number of Deaths in Order
[Asia Economy Reporter Minji Lee] The global death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed 3 million.
On the 17th (local time), Johns Hopkins University in the United States reported that the cumulative number of COVID-19 deaths worldwide reached 3,000,225 as of that day. This comes one year and one month after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11 last year.
Major foreign media compared this death toll to the population of Chicago, USA (approximately 2.7 million). In South Korea, this is roughly equivalent to the population of Incheon Metropolitan City. Some outlets estimated that there is a high possibility that some countries have concealed COVID-19 death numbers and that the death toll may not have been accurately counted, suggesting the actual number could be much higher than 3 million.
There are eight countries with more than 100,000 COVID-19 deaths: the United States (about 566,000), Brazil (about 368,000), Mexico (about 211,000), India (about 175,000), the United Kingdom (about 127,000), Italy (about 116,000), Russia (about 103,000), and France (about 100,000).
The global death toll surpassed 1 million last September, then reached 2 million in January this year, four months later. It took about three months for the number to increase by another 1 million to reach 3 million.
