Haenam-gun Takes the Lead in Protecting Kimchi, a Representative of K-Food
Complete Survey of Local Restaurants, Certification Plate Awarded for Using Domestic Kimchi
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Haenam-gun, the representative cabbage production area in Korea, has taken steps to protect domestic kimchi.
On the 13th, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and the recent controversy over Chinese pickled cabbage, interest in safe food has increased, and with the rising consumption of kimchi, a representative of K-Food, they have decided to strengthen management and supervision to ensure that all restaurants in the area use domestic kimchi.
To this end, by June, a full survey of the production origins of kimchi ingredients such as cabbage and red pepper powder will be conducted jointly by the Haenam branch of the Korea Foodservice Industry Association and public-private cooperation across all 850 general restaurants in the area.
Based on the survey results, certification signs will be posted at establishments using domestic kimchi and kimchi made from Haenam-grown cabbage to guide not only local residents but also tourists to use them with confidence.
Additionally, there will be a large-scale crackdown on false origin labeling and consumer deception, such as selling imported kimchi disguised as domestic kimchi.
