Surplus Renewable Energy in Jeju... Government to Develop Measures to Minimize Output Control
Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Jeju Provincial Government Hold the 1st 'Jeju Energy Council' Meeting of the Year
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the first 'Jeju Energy Council' of this year on the 9th in cooperation with Jeju Provincial Government to discuss measures to minimize renewable energy output control in Jeju.
Last year, due to the increase in renewable energy facilities in Jeju, the proportion of renewable energy generation output reached 16.2%, resulting in a total of 77 output control events.
The annual renewable energy output ratio in Jeju has been increasing every year, from 9.3% in 2015 to 13.2% in 2017, and 14.4% in 2019. The number of output control events in Jeju also shows an increasing trend, with 3 times in 2015, 14 times in 2017, and 46 times in 2019.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Jeju Provincial Government plan to increase renewable energy accommodation capacity through minimizing essential operation generators, installing energy storage systems (ESS) for grid stabilization, and #1 HVDC reverse transmission, and aim to minimize output control this year. Additionally, they plan to prioritize the application of P2G technology that converts surplus renewable energy into hydrogen, P2H technology that converts it into heat, and V2G technology that utilizes electric vehicles as ESS in Jeju, thereby discovering new flexible resources.

Lee Hohyun, Director of Energy Innovation Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, stated, "Since electricity supply and demand must be balanced at all times, controlling generators according to electricity demand is a common practice applied not only to renewable energy but to all power generation." He added, "We will review cost-effective output control measures not only for short-term minimization of renewable energy output control but also through compensation principles, detailed plans, and improvements in related market systems in the mid to long term."
