Yoo Seung-min calls Kim Sang-jo and Park Ju-min "despicable hypocrites" over "rent increase"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Joo-hee] Former People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Seung-min criticized former Blue House policy chief Kim Sang-jo and Democratic Party lawmaker Park Joo-min for raising apartment rents before the implementation of the "Three Lease Laws," calling them "despicable hypocrites."
Yoo, who is the co-chairman of the People Power Party's campaign committee for the April 7 by-elections, appeared on YTN Radio's "Hwang Bo-seon's Start of a New Morning" on the 1st and said, "The public is appalled by this extreme hypocrisy."
Yoo pointed out, "I wondered why there are so many of these people among the core figures of this administration," adding, "These people are all from Minbyun and People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, and they have pretended to represent the socially vulnerable and monopolize justice and fairness."
He continued, "These people raised rents just before the law they created?the lease law?was enacted. (Lawmaker Park) was the representative proposer of this law, but raising rents on jeonse and wolse before the law took effect means they caused tremendous pain to tenants because they knew the law well."
Earlier, it was revealed that former policy chief Kim renewed the jeonse contract on his own apartment in Gangnam, Seoul, on July 29 last year?two days before the passage of the amended Housing Lease Protection Act, which included a 5% cap on jeonse and wolse rents?and raised the jeonse deposit by 14% (120 million KRW), leading to his dismissal.

Similarly, Lawmaker Park signed a new wolse lease contract around the same time for an apartment in Sindang-dong, Jung-gu, changing the terms from a 300 million KRW deposit and 1 million KRW monthly rent to a 100 million KRW deposit and 1.85 million KRW monthly rent. Applying the jeonse-to-wolse conversion rate (4%) at the time, this amounted to about a 9% increase. Park was also the representative proposer of the amended Housing Lease Protection Act in the 21st National Assembly.
