Geumcheon-gu, Pursuing the Dream of Air Force Base Relocation Together with Residents
Geumcheon-gu Forms 'Air Force Base Relocation Promotion Residents Committee'... Recruiting Participating Members
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) is forming the ‘Civil Committee for the Relocation of the Air Force Base’ to actively promote the long-awaited project of relocating the Air Force base, and is recruiting participating members until the 9th.
The district has been promoting the relocation project of the Air Force base, which has been hindering regional development and revitalization for decades due to its location in the middle of the city, since 2005.
However, the project has faced difficulties as no agreement has been reached on the candidate sites for the current Air Force base relocation.
Accordingly, the district decided to form a civil committee to collect residents’ opinions regarding the preparation of the relocation site and to facilitate smooth policy decisions.
The recruitment target is Geumcheon-gu residents aged 18 or older, with two members recruited from each neighborhood, totaling 20 members.
Residents wishing to participate can download the application form from the district’s website, fill it out, and submit it via email (kaizen@seoul.go.kr) or to the Urban Planning Division on the 11th floor of Geumcheon-gu Office.
The district will select civil committee members by randomly drawing from applicants classified by neighborhood, and the results will be posted on the district website and individually notified on April 12.
Selected civil committee members will participate in the decision-making process regarding the Air Force base relocation project and provide various opinions.
Meanwhile, the Air Force base relocation project began in 2008 with the promotion of an urban development project including the Air Force base site. When the project was canceled in 2012 due to LH Corporation’s withdrawal, the district designated the Air Force base as a special planning zone in 2015 during the revision of the Geumcheon-gu core district unit plan to guide planned development.
Last year, the district reviewed candidate sites for the Air Force base relocation and submitted a relocation consultation request to the Ministry of National Defense. Although consultations were held with the relevant local governments, all opposed the relocation of the military base, causing delays in the project.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “We have made efforts for years to fully relocate and develop the Air Force base site, but the review of candidate sites has been the biggest obstacle, causing difficulties in the project. We ask for residents’ active participation as we seek solutions together with the community to accelerate the project.”
