World No. 34 Billy Horschel has been crowned the 'Match King.' On the 29th (Korean time), at the Austin Golf Club in Texas, USA (par 71, 7,108 yards), he defeated Scottie Scheffler (both from the USA) by 2 holes in the final of the World Golf Championships (WGC) Series Dell Technologies Match Play (total prize money $10.5 million). This marks his 6th PGA Tour win, his first in 2 years and 11 months since the Zurich Classic in April 2018, with a winner's prize of $1.82 million (20.6 billion KRW).
Horschel gave up a bogey on the early 2nd hole (par 4) but regained momentum with a chip shot birdie on the 5th hole (par 4). Scheffler made consecutive bogeys on the 7th and 9th holes, conceding two holes, which proved costly. This scoreline remained unchanged up to the 17th hole (par 3). Scheffler was also unlucky to miss a 1.4m putt on the 14th hole (par 4), while Horschel secured his advantage by hitting a greenside bunker shot close to the hole on the 16th hole (par 3).

View original imageHorschel was the 2014 Playoffs (PO) champion. He joined the PGA Tour in 2011 and earned his first victory at the Zurich Classic in April 2013. In 2014, he delivered a remarkable performance with a tie for 2nd at the 2nd PO event Deutsche Bank Championship, followed by consecutive wins at the 3rd BMW Championship and the final 4th Tour Championship. On the final day of the Tour Championship, he secured a 3-stroke victory playing alongside world No. 1 Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), drawing even more spotlight.
It is interesting that Horschel earned $13.44 million (15.2 billion KRW) from the PO alone, including $600,000 for 2nd place in the 2nd event, $1.44 million each for wins in the 3rd and 4th events, and a $10 million PO champion bonus. After reaching his 5th win at the AT&T Byron Nelson in May 2017 and the Zurich Classic in 2018, he experienced a decline. However, this year, he changed the momentum with a tie for 2nd at the WGC Series Workday Championship on the 1st and has entered a revival mode.

Scheffler's surge stopped at 2nd place. He is a 24-year-old rookie who joined the PGA Tour last year. Making his debut in this tournament, he created news by defeating Ian Poulter (England) in the round of 16 and 'No. 3' Jon Rahm (Spain) in the quarterfinals consecutively. In the morning semifinals, he also defeated 2013 champion Matt Kuchar (USA), but fell short of the final puzzle by '2%'. Kuchar secured 3rd place by beating Victor Perez (France) by 2 holes in the 3rd-4th place match.
