From Coffee Grounds to Flower Pots... Jangwi Youth Culture Nurim Center in Seongbuk-gu Recycling Experience
Coffee Grounds Reborn as Flowerpots, Coffee Clay Experience Activity... Making Character Deodorizers and Decorating Coffee Flowerpots with Coffee Clay Upcycling
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) Jangwi Youth Culture Nurim Center (89-6 Jangwol-ro) conducted a 'Coffee Clay Comforting People and the Earth' experience activity for local youth on the 24th to welcome the new semester.
This activity was planned to encourage youth interest in the environment and resource upcycling. Participants learned about environmental pollution caused by discarded coffee grounds and created various useful items for daily life using coffee clay made by upcycling coffee grounds.
An official from the district stated, “Coffee grounds left after making coffee contain eco-friendly elements, but in reality, most are discarded without recognizing this fact. Since the grounds contain no harmful substances and include nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium necessary for plant growth, they can be upcycled into eco-friendly compost, fuel, and other useful items. This idea inspired the planning of this experience activity.”
The participating youth filled coffee clay into various molds to make character-shaped deodorants and planted plants in pots made from coffee clay. Through this experience, they learned how everyday waste we casually discard can be transformed into excellent household items and had the opportunity to raise their interest in resource upcycling.
A representative from Jangwi Youth Culture Nurim Center said, “Currently, we operate a youth cafe on the first floor of the center, and in the future, we plan to provide various eco-friendly upcycling experience programs to local youth by recycling coffee grounds discarded at the cafe into coffee clay.”
Meanwhile, Jangwi Youth Culture Nurim Center is a Seongbuk-gu public youth-exclusive space equipped with facilities such as a dance practice room, VR experience space, cafe, play and study areas, and party room. Program registration will be conducted regularly via phone or the website.
