The Riverside Police Department in California recently launched an investigation into incidents where anonymous hate letters were indiscriminately sent to Asian-owned stores and Asian students, local broadcaster NBC4 reported on the 26th (local time).
According to the police, an anonymous letter was delivered to a nail salon in Riverside on the 21st. The letter contained racist slurs and insults such as "Asians have pancake faces and eat cockroach, dog, cat, and monkey brains. They smell and are disgusting."
It also included threats like "Go back to your horrible country, leave America."
Jackie Bu, a Vietnamese American who received the hate letter, posted it on Instagram, saying, "Hate solves nothing. We will not remain silent," and raised her voice, urging, "This behavior must stop."
Similar letters were also sent to Asian nail salons in Hillsburg, California, and San Bernardino County.
In Rocklin, Placer County, California, hate messages were sent online targeting Asian high school students. According to the local newspaper Sacramento Bee, Asian students at Whitney High School recently received messages from an anonymous Instagram account containing anti-Chinese content and stating, "You are not welcome here."
The local school district issued a statement saying it is conducting an internal investigation and will take disciplinary action once the sender is identified.
Earlier, a Korean American woman living in Silvertown, Orange County, California, also received a similar letter.
