Request to Cease Use of Company Name and Issue Official Apology
LG Approves Holding Company Establishment at Shareholders' Meeting on the Same Day
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] Kim Jeong-ryeol, President of Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation (LX), has requested the newly established holding company 'LX Holdings Co., Ltd.'?formed by Koo Bon-joon, LG Group Advisor who is separating from LG Group?to cease using the LX name and issue an official apology.
On the 26th, President Kim stated in a position paper titled "Cease Using the Name of LX Holdings Co., Ltd." that "LX is a quasi-governmental institution under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and does not represent the interests of any individual or specific organization," adding, "The trademark application by LX Holdings has a high potential to damage the public nature of LX as a quasi-governmental institution."
He continued, "There are serious concerns about significant damage to the brand business that LX has been promoting for over 10 years and a high risk of public confusion," and pointed out, "If the holding company expands its business areas in the future, the reputation and distinctiveness that LX has built up could be seriously undermined."
President Kim emphasized, "This issue is not only a problem for LX but applies to all government and public institutions," and added, "If the private sector can freely use the names of government and public institutions by merely changing the image, there would be no way to prevent it, which could undermine the credibility of national projects and cause enormous damage."
Earlier, LG Group finalized the name of the newly established holding company led by Advisor Koo Bon-joon as LX Holdings and registered over 100 trademarks including 'LX,' 'LX Hausys,' and 'LX MMA' with the Korean Intellectual Property Office. Because of this, Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation, which has used LX as its corporate identity (CI) and English abbreviation since 2012, has continuously expressed opposition.
President Kim explained, "We will actively work with the National Assembly and others to strengthen institutional measures prohibiting the use of similar names by public institutions, and will also take legal actions such as injunction applications to stop the trademark registration."
However, LG passed the plan to spin off the holding company establishing LX Holdings at the regular shareholders' meeting held at LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul, on the same day. LX Holdings is a newly established holding company created by separating the investment divisions of four subsidiaries: LG International, LG Hausys, Silicon Works, and LG MMA.
