View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] Sinwol 3-dong in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, which has been experiencing urban decline since 1995, is set to actively promote urban regeneration.
On the 25th, Seoul City held the 2nd Urban Regeneration Committee meeting and conditionally approved the urban regeneration activation plan for the area around 176 Sinwol 3-dong (106,023㎡), the city announced on the 26th.
This area is a collective residential district formed after the land readjustment project in the 1970s, where complex decline is progressing due to continuous population decrease, local commercial stagnation, and building aging. It was selected for the Seoul-type Urban Regeneration Activation Project in April 2019 and was chosen last November for the Urban Regeneration New Deal Project and Smart Urban Regeneration Project promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The city plans to actively promote the urban regeneration project with an investment of 32.5 billion KRW after the Yangcheon District Office’s activation plan notification process. Fourteen catalyst projects will be carried out, including ▲Culture Development Center ▲Housing Improvement ▲Village Parking Environment Improvement. In particular, the city plans to operate a 'Home Repair and Small-scale Housing Maintenance Team' to support 130 beautified houses and repair 150 aged houses by 2024.
Additionally, as part of the Smart Urban Regeneration Project, the city will promote public Wi-Fi installation, smart bench installation using solar power, and smart library projects.
The city also announced that the urban regeneration activation plan for the area around 625 Dobong 2-dong, Dobong-gu (96,615㎡), selected as an Urban Regeneration New Deal Project site by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in October 2019, was approved.
This area is located between Dobong Station and Banghak Station in a station area, but more than 90% of the buildings are over 20 years old and thus aged. Except for senior centers and daycare centers, welfare facilities and resident convenience facilities are lacking, and the decline of the area is a concern due to decreasing youth and young adult populations.

With the approval of this plan, the city plans to invest 25 billion KRW to promote 10 catalyst projects and 5 linked projects. They will purchase vacant houses that have become slums to create 4-meter-wide streets and carry out home repairs and alleyway maintenance at the housing unit level. While converting spaces of harmful businesses into resident activity spaces, a center providing childcare and after-school care services will also be established.
