View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 26th that it will participate in the Earth Hour event on the 27th to realize carbon neutrality and declare the challenge task for the 5th Government Innovation Proposal 'Endgame Development Competition.'
Earth Hour is the world's largest citizen environmental movement, a campaign in which lights are turned off for one hour from a pre-agreed time on the last Saturday of March every year. It is hosted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and is participated in by citizens and landmarks in 188 countries worldwide.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety will show its commitment to transitioning to a carbon-neutral society by declaring the challenge task of the 5th Government Innovation Proposal Endgame Development Competition, ‘Annual 2% Greenhouse Gas Reduction Implementation Plan,’ and simultaneously turning off the lights at the Sejong Government Complex and Seoul Government Complex for about 10 minutes from 8:30 p.m. on the 27th.
The challenge task will be announced by Minister Jeon Hae-cheol through the Ministry’s YouTube channel on the 27th. This Endgame Development Competition, under the theme ‘Let’s Live Together, Us,’ was selected as a challenge task to create a space of empathy for realizing carbon neutrality by 2050 together with the public through the ‘Annual 2% Greenhouse Gas Reduction Implementation Plan.’
To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, a reduction target of 574.3 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions must be met by 2030, requiring an annual reduction of more than 2% in greenhouse gases.
The Ministry plans to discover policy proposals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions together with the public and spread consensus for realizing a carbon-neutral society through public-private cooperation. The Endgame Development Competition will be held from Earth Day on April 22 to Environment Day on June 5.
Meanwhile, the competition will include various events under the theme ‘I couldn’t protect the Earth because I was busy making a living,’ allowing anyone to participate enjoyably and practice carbon neutrality, including the Earth Hour lights-off event at 8:30 p.m. on the 27th. Participation and detailed information can be found on Gwanghwamun 1st Street.
Minister Jeon Hae-cheol said, “Carbon neutrality is an obligation and reality that all our citizens must practice and pursue,” adding, “We ask for your great interest and participation in the 5th Government Innovation Proposal Endgame Development Competition, a collaborative platform where the public and private sectors think about and solve problems to realize a carbon-neutral society together.”
