Apple MR Headset Lighter Than iPhone to Launch... Under 150g
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] There is speculation that Apple's upcoming mixed reality (MR) headset will be lighter than the iPhone.
According to IT media The Verge and others, Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities, stated in a report that Apple's MR headset will weigh less than 150g. This is much lighter than the previously released Valve Index (809g), HoloLens 2 (645g), and even Facebook's Oculus Quest 2 (503g), which has recently sold out in Korea due to improved comfort.
The Verge noted, "Considering that the iPhone weighs 164g, the headset could be lighter than the iPhone," adding, "A lighter weight means it could be easier to wear Apple's MR headset for extended periods." Until now, the market has raised concerns about MR headsets causing neck pain, pressure on the head, and difficulty wearing them for long durations due to their weight.
Apple's MR headset is expected to include eye-tracking features that analyze eye movement. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo explained that while most devices currently operate using handheld controllers, eye-tracking allows for easy control through eye movement, providing an intuitive visual experience. There is also mention of the possibility of iris recognition functionality being included.
However, it appears that the release will take some time. Earlier, Bloomberg reported that it would be difficult for Apple to launch the MR headset by 2022.
The price is also expected to be high. It has been reported that Apple discussed pricing the device around $3,000. This is about ten times the $299 price of the Oculus Quest 2 but cheaper than the $3,500 HoloLens 2.

The Verge stated, "It will take time until release," but also noted, "Apple recently moved Dan Riccio, the head of hardware, to oversee the company's augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) devices, which could be a sign of the company's intention to launch the device soon."
