Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Holds Kickoff Meeting for 'Solar Power Roundtable'
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has established the 'Solar Roundtable,' a public-private communication channel in the solar power sector, and held its first meeting on the 23rd.
Solar power is an eco-friendly energy source that does not emit carbon. The scale of new solar power installations has been increasing, reaching 2.4 gigawatts (GW) in 2018, 3.8 GW in 2019, and 4.1 GW in 2020.
The Solar Roundtable, composed of government, public institutions, and experts from industry, academia, and research, was created to share the government's carbon neutrality policy direction with the industry and to discover and discuss various policy demands. At this meeting, the following were presented: ▲ Progress of solar power policy implementation and carbon neutrality promotion plans ▲ Policy proposals for solar power to achieve carbon neutrality ▲ Trends and prospects in solar power technology development.
The meeting mainly identified the following as key tasks for realizing carbon neutrality: ▲ Expanding potential through site discovery ▲ Ultra-high efficiency of solar cells and securing core material technologies ▲ Establishing power systems to respond to solar power variability.
The government plans to actively support the realization of carbon neutrality by utilizing the tasks discussed at the roundtable in the 2050 carbon neutrality scenario to be completed by the end of June and the energy carbon neutrality innovation strategy to be established by the end of the year.
