After Alaska Talks, Taiwan Asserts 'Sovereignty'... China Warns "Provocation Is Dangerous"
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] Ahead of and following the high-level talks between the United States and China held in Alaska, Taiwan asserted its sovereignty, prompting the Chinese government to issue a strong warning. The Chinese government emphasized the existing "One China" principle and warned Taiwan that it would not tolerate unilateral actions.
According to local media such as China’s Global Times on the 22nd, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China, stressed, "There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory," adding, "Taiwan belongs to all Chinese people, and issues of Taiwan’s sovereignty and territory must be decided by all Chinese. It is dangerous for Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party to change its stance and provoke, and they will reap what they sow."
This is interpreted as a warning message regarding Taiwan’s sovereignty claims following the US-China Alaska talks. Earlier, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council stated on the 19th (local time), immediately after the conclusion of the US-China high-level talks in Alaska, that "Taiwan does not belong to China, and only the Taiwanese people have the right to decide Taiwan’s future and development."
Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian said, "The 'One China Principle' is a universal recognition of the international community," adding, "This is a historical fact that no person or force can change. Although the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have not yet unified, China’s sovereignty and territory have never been divided. The mainland and Taiwan both belong to China, and compatriots on both sides are all Chinese."
