"Won't Listen If It Doesn't Fit": 30s Man Sentenced for Habitual Abuse of Wife and Children Over 3 Years
Assaulting Wife in Front of Children
Court: "The Crime Was Brutal... The Nature of the Offense Is Very Bad"
[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] A man in his 30s who subjected his wife and children to severe abuse over three years was sentenced to prison again in the appellate court. It was revealed that this man assaulted his wife in front of others because she "did not listen," and also assaulted her in front of their children, sparking public outrage.
On the 18th, the 3rd Criminal Division of the Gwangju District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Taeho) sentenced A (38), who was indicted on charges of habitual injury, coercion, and violation of the Child Welfare Act (child abuse), to two years in prison, the same as the first trial. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 40 hours of a child abuse treatment program and was banned from employment at child and youth-related institutions for three years.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The crimes were brutal, sadistic, and committed habitually. Considering A’s very poor criminal nature and the fact that he blamed his wife for the crimes without any remorse, the sentence was determined."
A is accused of repeatedly assaulting his wife B with fists and blunt objects, causing injuries, or threatening her with weapons 12 times from January 2017 to January last year at his company and home.
It was found that A used violence against B, who worked at his company, for reasons such as "unsatisfactory work performance," "not responding properly," and "lack of preparation."
He also hit B and verbally abused her for over an hour in front of other employees, saying, "If you don’t get beaten, you won’t listen." Furthermore, A whipped B with a phone charging cable and forced her to buy a club and go home with it.
During the same period, A shouted at his children, "If you’re going to keep watching mom get hit, sit still, or go to your room," and was found to have hit his children for reasons such as "scribbling on furniture or spilling snacks."

A appealed, claiming "the original sentence was too harsh and some charges are not admissible," but the court upheld the original judgment as fair.
