12 Million Year-End Corporate Shareholders in December... Samsung Electronics Leads with 2.96 Million Shareholders
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] It has been revealed that the number of shareholders of domestic listed companies (based on December fiscal year-end) reached 9.19 million. This is a 48.5% increase compared to the previous year's number of shareholders (6.18 million). The company with the largest number of owners was Samsung Electronics.
According to the Korea Securities Depository on the 16th, the total number of shareholders of 2,352 listed companies with December fiscal year-end last year was 9,190,076. The average number of stocks held per person was 5.24, and the average number of shares held per person was 10,779.
The number of shareholders of companies listed on the KOSPI market reached 7.84 million, showing a 59% increase compared to the previous year. In the KOSPI market, corporate owners held 24.3 billion shares, accounting for 43.9% of the total.
The number of shareholders of companies listed on the KOSDAQ market was 5.43 million, a 54.7% increase compared to the previous year. Unlike the KOSPI market, individual shareholders accounted for the largest proportion in the KOSDAQ market. Individuals held a total of 29.5 billion shares, accounting for 68.8% of the total.
By stock, Samsung Electronics had the largest number of shareholders at 2,958,682. Hyundai Motor and Korea Electric Power Corporation followed with 690,000 and 580,000 shareholders, respectively. In the KOSDAQ market, Celltrion Healthcare ranked first with 290,000 shareholders, followed by Kakao Games and SillaJen with 270,000 and 160,000 shareholders, respectively.
The stock with the highest proportion of foreign investors was Tongyang Life Insurance, with foreigners holding 83.8% of the total shares. Ssangyong Motor and S-Oil also had over 70% of their shares held by foreign shareholders.

Meanwhile, looking at the age and gender distribution of individual shareholders, those in their 40s accounted for the highest proportion at 24.3%. The number of shares held was highest among those in their 50s, totaling 16.4 billion shares. Male shareholders held 36.4 billion shares, accounting for 73.3% of the total, while females held 13.3 billion shares, accounting for 26.7%.
