Gwanak-gu Secures 4.2 Billion Won for Overhead Cable Maintenance... Maintenance of Spiderweb-like Overhead Cables
Ministry of Science and ICT-led Local Government Maintenance Plan Evaluation Top Grade... Secured 4.2 Billion KRW Budget for Overhead Cable Maintenance... Expected Revolutionary Change in Urban Aesthetics and Safe Living Environment through Aging and Defective Overhead Cable Maintenance Project
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) received the highest rating in the evaluation of maintenance plans by local governments, newly introduced this year under the Ministry of Science and ICT’s 2nd Mid-to-Long-Term Comprehensive Plan for Overhead Cable Maintenance (’21?’25), securing a maintenance budget of 4.2 billion KRW for overhead cables.
This is the highest amount among autonomous districts in Seoul.
Recently, changes in household types centered on single-person households, frequent residential moves, an increase in broadcasting and communication service subscribers, and frequent changes have led to a proliferation of overhead cables, significantly damaging the cityscape and increasing the risk of safety accidents.
In response, the district secured a budget of 3.2 billion KRW last year to carry out overhead cable maintenance projects, and it is expected that this achievement will bring about a revolutionary improvement in the local environment.
This year, 13 zones in 11 neighborhoods, including the Dolsam Happy Village Residential Environment Improvement District in Samseong-dong, were selected as priority maintenance targets. The secured project budget of 4.2 billion KRW will be invested to systematically maintain overhead cables such as communication lines and electric wires tangled on utility poles in cooperation with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and telecommunication operators.
To successfully promote the maintenance project through local residents’ feedback and active participation, an on-site task force composed of residents, public officials, and experts for each target area will be organized and operated, and public relations efforts will be strengthened.
Additionally, to support parking and site access, smooth project implementation will be facilitated through organic cooperation with related departments.
Mayor Park Jun-hee stated, “Since the problems caused by the proliferation of overhead cables are serious, I instructed to actively maintain them even with our own budget. Through the highest rating achievement in this local government maintenance plan evaluation, we will do our best to promote the overhead cable maintenance project to improve the cityscape and ensure a safe living environment for residents.” He added, “We will continue to strive to make Gwanak a safer and more pleasant place.”
