Yoo Jeong-sook Appointed as Artistic Director of National Gugak Center Dance Company
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The National Gugak Center announced on the 15th that it has appointed Yoo Jeong-sook (61) as the artistic director of the dance troupe. The term is two years.
New artistic director Yoo Jeong-sook graduated from Hansung University with a degree in Dance, earned a master's degree in Physical Education from Ewha Womans University, and a doctorate in Physical Education from Dankook University. From 1985 to 1987, she was a member of the National Gugak Center dance troupe. She has held key positions such as vice president of the Dance History and Records Association, chairman of the Masterpiece Dance Cooperative, vice president of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 92 Taepyeongmu Preservation Society, and executive director of the Aak Ilmu Preservation Society. She has contributed to the development of Korean dance by mastering National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 1 Jongmyo Jeryeak (Ilmu) and No. 92 Taepyeongmu.
In particular, as the artistic director of Hyosan Arts Institute and the Traditional Arts Transmission Center, she planned and choreographed various works such as "Hwayakjo Vision" and "Dance Transmission Exhibition," continuously undertaking performance projects that are difficult in the private sector, striving to preserve Korean dance. Since 2018, she has served as a cultural heritage expert committee member at the Cultural Heritage Administration, representing the voice of the Korean dance community.

Artistic director Yoo Jeong-sook stated, "I will build a dance troupe firmly grounded in the principles of our dance," adding, "I will take the lead in having our Jeongjae (呈才) registered as a World Cultural Heritage and in having 'Chunaengjeon,' which has not yet been designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, officially recognized as such."
