The Jeonnam Provincial Council Youth Council Classroom is a program that allows about 850 students from 28 elementary, middle, high, and special schools in the province to directly experience the legislative process. It has been held from the 9th of this month until July 8th to help youth cultivate democratic awareness and easily understand the functions and roles of local councils.
This event has been held for 11 years since 2009 but was completely suspended last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, it was resumed for the first time in a non-face-to-face format.
The students participated in the opening ceremony followed by ▲mock council ▲council quiz classroom ▲3-minute free speech ▲closing ceremony in sequence. During the mock council, a bill concerning the installation of CCTV within the school, reflecting students’ interests, was proposed, and students experienced the legislative process including debates for and against and voting.
In response to the question, “How can one become a provincial council member?” Chairperson Jeon said, “You need to pay attention to your surroundings and neighbors and constantly think about how we can live happier lives.”
