Gwangju City Conducts Comprehensive Maintenance of 16.4km Dedicated Bicycle Path Along Gwangju Stream
4.3km of New Dedicated Bicycle Lanes for Daily Use Near Pyeongdong Industrial Complex
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 9th that it will significantly expand bicycle infrastructure this year by newly establishing lifestyle bicycle roads, thoroughly maintaining existing bicycle roads, and completing bicycle-only bridges to enable citizens to use bicycles safely and conveniently.
Currently, the total length of bicycle roads in the Gwangju area reaches 661 km, but among them, 508 km are mixed-use roads for both bicycles and pedestrians installed in existing urban areas. Due to narrow road widths and many deteriorated surfaces, both bicycle users and pedestrians have experienced inconvenience.
Accordingly, Gwangju City plans to conduct on-site inspections of the entire 16.4 km bicycle-only road along the Gwangju Stream this year, selectively repairing deteriorated or damaged sections and facilities that need improvement, and adding bicycle storage facilities to enhance convenience for citizens.
Additionally, based on suggestions from citizens during the On-site Listening Day, a 2.8 km lifestyle bicycle-only road near the Pyeongdong Industrial Complex will be newly established this year. Furthermore, as part of the future Water Circulation Leading City Creation Project, a 1.5 km lifestyle bicycle-only road between Sangmu Station and City Hall will also be constructed.
Along with this, the pedestrian and bicycle-only bridge near Eodeungdae Bridge (length 360 m, width 5.5 m), currently under construction, is expected to be completed in the first half of this year.
Once the dedicated bridge is built, it is expected to directly connect Wolgok District in Gwangsan-gu and Sangmu District in Seo-gu, making it more convenient to use the Yeongsan River and Gwangju Stream bicycle roads.
In parallel with the construction of Urban Railway Line 2, bicycle racks and parking facilities around major subway stations will be expanded, and to build a connected bicycle road network, bicycle-only lanes will be installed on roads with three or more lanes in one direction to expand bicycle road infrastructure.
In addition, the five autonomous districts will maintain 10 km of aging bicycle roads in the city center and promote the ‘Together Hope Bicycle Project,’ which collects abandoned bicycles in the city, repairs them, and delivers them to vulnerable groups.
The eight bicycle road hub terminals and five mobile bicycle safety schools that have been operated so far will continue to be held.
Also, the unmanned shared bicycle ‘Tarangkke’ has been deployed with 200 units at 52 unmanned rental stations in the Sangmu District and has been operating on a pilot basis since July last year. Expansion plans will be reviewed after a demand survey.
