Iran Condemns US Airstrikes in Syria: "Response to Rocket Attacks"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] As Iran strongly condemned the U.S. airstrikes on pro-Iranian militias in Syria, the U.S. stated that the strikes were in response to rocket attacks targeting U.S. military bases in Iraq.
On the 27th (local time), the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement criticizing, "The illegal U.S. attack on eastern Syria violates human rights and international law," reporting that one person was killed and four were injured due to the U.S. attack.
Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized, "This attack by the new U.S. administration blatantly violates Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty," adding, "It will escalate military tensions and regional instability."
The U.S. military conducted airstrikes on militia facilities near the Iraq border in eastern Syria on the 25th. This was the first military action since the inauguration of the Joe Biden administration.
The U.S. Department of Defense stated that several facilities of pro-Iranian militias, including Kata'ib Hezbollah (KH) and Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS), were destroyed in the airstrikes.
Syria has been embroiled in a civil war since the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, with ongoing battles between the Syrian government forces led by President Bashar al-Assad and rebel groups.
Iran, along with Russia, supports the Syrian government forces, and pro-Iranian militias backed by Iran are deployed throughout Syria.
