Choi Jung-woo, POSCO Chairman, Submits Excuse for Absence from National Assembly Industrial Accident Hearing
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Choi Jung-woo, chairman of POSCO, has notified that he will not attend the National Assembly Industrial Accident Hearing scheduled for the 22nd due to back pain.
According to the office of Rep. Noh Woong-rae of the Environment and Labor Committee of the National Assembly on the 18th, Chairman Choi submitted a letter of absence for the industrial accident hearing to the committee the day before.
In the letter of absence, Chairman Choi stated, "I have had a chronic back condition, and sitting for long periods is uncomfortable. After receiving a hospital diagnosis, the doctor recommended two weeks of rest, so I am unable to appear as a witness at the National Assembly."
Chairman Choi added, "CEO Jang In-hwa is directly in charge of all matters related to industrial accidents and knows the details better than anyone. I believe he can respond to the lawmakers' inquiries as clearly and thoroughly as I would."
He also said, "Our company holds a monthly operational meeting where all POSCO Group executives gather to share business status and discuss related issues, which has also been chaired by CEO Jang. In particular, CEO Jang holds authority and responsibility as head of the steel division regarding the Pohang and Gwangyang steelworks' business and safety matters."
He continued, "I sincerely apologize for causing any disruption to the hearing process due to unavoidable circumstances. Considering the above, I request permission to allow CEO Jang to respond on my behalf." Chairman Choi attached a medical certificate issued the day before (the 17th) by an orthopedic clinic in Seoul to the letter of absence. The diagnosis on the certificate is 'lumbar sprain and strain.'

Earlier, the Environment and Labor Committee decided on the 8th to hold an industrial accident hearing on the 22nd targeting nine CEOs of companies including POSCO, where multiple industrial accidents have occurred.
