"Lead the Change" ... UNIST Holds 2021 Graduation Ceremony
Degree Conferral Ceremony on the 18th via Pre-recorded Online Broadcast
Graduating 658 Students Including 376 Bachelor's, 112 Master's, and 116 Doctoral Candidates
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST, President Lee Yong-hoon) held the ‘2021 Academic Year Degree Conferment Ceremony’ at 10 a.m. on the 18th. This degree conferment ceremony was conducted online to prevent infectious diseases.
At the ceremony, a total of 658 graduates received degrees, including 376 bachelor's, 112 master's, 116 doctoral, and 54 graduates from special and professional graduate schools.
With this, UNIST has produced a total of 6,494 science and technology talents, including 4,563 bachelor's, 1,305 master's, and 626 doctoral graduates.
The degree conferment ceremony, held through the official UNIST YouTube account, was conducted by broadcasting a pre-produced video.
The event began with a congratulatory performance by the student orchestra ‘UNISTra.’ This was followed by congratulatory speeches from Chairman Lee Hyun-soon, Vice Minister Jeong Byeong-seon of the Ministry of Science and ICT, Mayor Song Cheol-ho of Ulsan Metropolitan City, Chairman Park Byeong-seok of the Ulsan Metropolitan Council, an academic report by Dean Kim Ji-hyun, and a degree conferment address by President Lee Yong-hoon.
President Lee Yong-hoon emphasized, “In this era of great transformation centered on digital innovation and eco-friendliness, the role of outstanding science and technology talents is more important than ever,” and added, “I hope the graduates with the highest capabilities will take the lead in change.”
Following the congratulatory speeches, congratulatory messages from UNIST members and alumni continued. Jo Ji-yeon, CEO of the student startup ‘Class101,’ Professor Park Jong-hwa of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, who leads the faculty startup ‘Clinomics’ listed on KOSDAQ last year, Professor Lee Jun-hee of the Department of Energy and Chemical Engineering and Professor Rodney S. Ruoff of the Department of Chemistry, who received attention for remarkable research achievements in 2020, and alumnus Kim Jin-young, a first cohort student of UNIST recently appointed as a professor, participated to support the future of the graduates.
Students Kim Ji-wan (Department of Design and Human Engineering, undergraduate) and Lee Myung-hee (Department of Energy Engineering, doctoral program) responded to the congratulations with speeches as representatives of the graduates. Following this, videos and photos produced and submitted by the graduates decorated the background of the event.
The degree conferment ceremony replaced the degree awarding by broadcasting the full list of graduates who received degrees that day.
For the 2021 academic year, Dr. Jang Hae-sung received the Yebong Best Research Award, and Drs. Lim Young-hyun, Lee Jong-bo, and Choi Soo-bin were named UNIST Best Research Award recipients. Student Heo Nam-wook received the UNIST President’s Award.

UNIST has been holding the degree conferment ceremony online without on-site attendees since 2020 in accordance with COVID-19 quarantine guidelines. The school plans to prepare events such as academic gown rentals for graduates in the future depending on the infectious disease situation.
