Government Begins Deregulation of Designated Areas for Cheonji Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 and 2
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] The government has begun the process of canceling the designation of the planned nuclear power plant site for Cheonji Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 and 2 in Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk, which was scrapped under the nuclear phase-out policy.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 17th, a recent official letter was sent to Yeongdeok County to proceed with the cancellation of the designation of the planned development area related to the Cheonji Nuclear Power Plant construction project. The ministry requested cooperation from Yeongdeok County regarding the cancellation of the designation notice for the Cheonji Nuclear Power Plant site and asked for any feedback by the 18th.

Accordingly, the ministry is expected to soon hold the Power Development Project Promotion Committee meeting to review and approve the cancellation notice. Once the designation notice is canceled, the Cheonji Nuclear Power Plant construction project will be completely terminated. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power is reported to repurchase the land acquired for the Cheonji Nuclear Power Plant site after the cancellation of the designation notice.
