White House "Supports Establishment of Congressional Riot Investigation Committee"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] On the 16th (local time), the White House expressed support for the House of Representatives' push to establish an investigative committee related to the federal Capitol riot.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated in a press briefing that she supports the House's position to establish an independent commission similar to the one formed after the 9/11 attacks to investigate the Capitol riot by supporters of former President Donald Trump on January 6th.
Earlier, the House announced the need to establish an independent and bipartisan investigative committee that is not influenced by politics regarding the Capitol riot and said it would soon submit related legislation.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, said this committee would be modeled after the commission convened after the 2001 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The committee will investigate and report on the facts and causes related to the terrorist attack on the federal Capitol and the obstruction of a peaceful transfer of power.
The investigation will also include facts related to the preparedness and response of the Capitol Police and other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
On the 13th, the U.S. Senate, evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans, rejected the impeachment article accusing former President Trump of inciting insurrection by provoking his supporters.
