Donation of 500 Plant Seeds Including Seonjebikkot and Solbinamu to Baekdudaegan National Arboretum on the 4th
Permanent Storage in Wild Plant Seed Conservation Facility 'Seed Vault' for Future Generations
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Botanic Park, which opened in 2019, will deposit seeds collected over the past two years to a seed storage facility. The transferred seeds will be permanently preserved at the Global Seed Vault for future generations.
On the 4th, Seoul City announced that the Seoul Botanic Park will deposit 500 plant seeds to the National Baekdudaegan Arboretum's Global Seed Vault.
This seed deposit is the first case of a national or public arboretum depositing seeds since the National Baekdudaegan Arboretum introduced a black box storage system last year to enhance the quality and security of seed storage. The depositing institution seals the black box, which is then stored in the Seed Vault as is.
The seeds being deposited include 500 items (65 families, 289 species) of endangered, rare, or endemic plants such as Viola verecunda, Daecheongbuchae, and Solbinamu, including seeds propagated by the Seoul Botanic Park itself.
Starting with this deposit, Seoul Botanic Park plans to carry out full-scale research and conservation activities for plant genetic resource preservation, fulfilling its role as a public arboretum.
Since its temporary opening in 2018 and official opening in May 2019, Seoul Botanic Park has welcomed 8.4 million visitors. In addition to research for plant genetic resource preservation, it strives to spread plant culture and raise awareness of the importance of plant conservation through plant exhibitions and education.
Han Jeong-hoon, director of Seoul Botanic Park, said, "I hope the deposited seeds will be safely delivered to future generations and contribute to preserving biodiversity," adding, "We will continue to work hard to inform citizens about the importance and necessity of preserving plant genetic resources."
