Nowon District Residents' Safety Insurance Also Covers COVID-19 Infectious Disease (3 Million KRW)
Added 3 Million KRW Coverage for Deaths Due to COVID-19 This Year... Coverage Period from Feb 1, 2022 to Jan 31, 2023
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) has added "COVID-19 Infectious Disease Death Compensation" to the coverage items of the "Resident Safety Insurance" for all residents and will implement it starting from the 1st.
The "Resident Safety Insurance," which has been in effect since 2018, is a system that pays insurance benefits to residents who die or suffer permanent disabilities due to various natural disasters, social disasters, or criminal damages, with compensation up to 10 million KRW per person.
The coverage targets all residents registered in Nowon-gu and registered foreigners. Any resident is automatically enrolled without any separate procedure, and the insurance is automatically canceled upon moving to another area.
Especially this year, the coverage has been further strengthened by providing 3 million KRW compensation in case of death from infectious diseases including COVID-19.
In addition, compensation is provided for ▲death from natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, and earthquakes (including heatstroke and sunstroke) ▲death or permanent disability from explosions, fires, or collapses ▲death or permanent disability from injuries while using public transportation ▲treatment expenses for injuries from school zone traffic accidents ▲injuries to persons of merit ▲sexual violence crime victims ▲violent crime injuries ▲death or permanent disability from gas accidents, etc. However, death of persons under 15 years old is excluded from coverage.
The coverage period is from February 1 this year to January 31 next year. Insurance claims must be filed within three years from the date of the accident, and the victim or legal heir can apply to the Korea Local Finance Association with supporting documents. Overlapping compensation is possible even if the individual already has personal insurance.
The district announced that through the implementation of the safety insurance last year, it paid a total of 50 million KRW in insurance benefits to eight residents, including 10 million KRW each for fire injury death and school zone traffic accident treatment expenses, and 5 million KRW each for sexual violence and violent crime compensation.
Also, as the number of residents using eco-friendly transportation such as bicycles increases, the district has enrolled all residents in bicycle insurance since 2015.
Like the safety insurance, residents registered in Nowon-gu are automatically enrolled, and even those who do not reside in the district but use bicycles from Nowon-gu public bicycle rental stations are covered by the insurance. Until last year, insurance benefits totaling 1.3216 billion KRW were paid to 1,965 residents who experienced bicycle accidents.
