Conan Doyle, Who Wanted to End the Sherlock Holmes Series, Musical 'The Final Problem'
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The original musical "The Final Problem," featuring mystery novelist Arthur Conan Doyle and his fictional character Sherlock Holmes as protagonists, will open on February 15 at Dream Art Center Hall 2.
"The Final Problem" is also the title of a short story in the Sherlock Holmes series written by Conan Doyle.
Conan Doyle wrote four novels and 56 short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes over about 40 years. In 1893, he serialized the "Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" series in Strand Magazine and intended to end the Sherlock Holmes series with "The Final Problem," published in December. However, due to overwhelming protests from readers, Conan Doyle resumed the series a few years later with the return of Sherlock Holmes.
The musical "The Final Problem" is inspired by the short story collection of the same name, in which Conan Doyle tried to conclude the series by having Holmes fall to his death at a waterfall. The story is newly created based on Conan Doyle's struggles as a writer who achieved tremendous success through the Sherlock Holmes novels and the hidden true story behind it.
