Tokyo Metropolis Reports Over 1,500 New COVID-19 Cases, Setting a New Record
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The number of new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo Metropolis, Japan, rose to the 1,500s on the 6th, breaking the record once again.
According to Kyodo News on this day, 1,591 new COVID-19 infections were confirmed in Tokyo Metropolis.
This surpassed the previous single-day record of 1,337 cases set on the 31st of last month, just six days ago.
The recent seven-day average of daily COVID-19 cases in Tokyo Metropolis is 1,072. This is the first time the weekly average has reached the 1,000s.
The Japanese government plans to declare a state of emergency on the 7th for four major metropolitan local governments in the Tokyo metropolitan area, including Tokyo Metropolis, where COVID-19 is rapidly spreading.
The Japanese government also declared a COVID-19 state of emergency nationwide or in some regions in April and May of last year.

The areas where the state of emergency will be reissued this time are Tokyo Metropolis, Kanagawa Prefecture, Chiba Prefecture, and Saitama Prefecture, with the declaration period expected to last about one month.
