Seoul Gangseo-gu Operates Online Life Science Classes at Community Centers in Q1 2021... Fun Science Experiments and Play Activities Related to Daily Life for Elementary Students in Hwagok 1-dong, Hwagok 8-dong, Ujangsan-dong, and Banghwa 1-dong
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) is operating the ‘Community Center Online Life Science Classroom,’ where fun science experiments can be enjoyed at home.
The district prepared the ‘Online Life Science Classroom’ to stimulate children’s interest in science and enhance their thinking skills and creativity through science experiments and play activities related to daily life.
The first quarter Life Science Classroom will be operated at community centers in each neighborhood, including Hwagok 1-dong, Hwagok 8-dong, Ujangsan-dong, and Banghwa 1-dong. Elementary school students in the area who wish to enroll can apply by visiting the community center.
The tuition is free, but a separate material fee (42,000 KRW) must be borne by each household. However, households receiving basic living subsidies are exempt from the material fee.
The classes run once a week for a total of 12 weeks from January to March, and applications are accepted until the enrollment deadline even after classes begin.
Classes are conducted by joining the band opened for each neighborhood and watching the posted lecture videos at any preferred time.
The lecture content includes ▲non-woven fabric humidifier ▲wall-mounted hygrometer ▲foam clay robot making ▲DNA model ▲changes in the shape of the moon, designed to help children easily and enjoyably learn scientific principles found in daily life through experiments.
Through the band, participants can ask questions or upload photos and videos of experiments they conducted themselves, aiming to compensate for the one-way nature of online classes.
Also, although the first quarter Life Science Classroom is conducted online, depending on the spread of COVID-19, from the second quarter onward, it will be flexibly operated by combining online and offline classes.
A district official said, “The Online Life Science Classroom was prepared so that children who find it difficult to play outside due to COVID-19 can experience science as enjoyably as play,” and added, “We hope many will participate in this science classroom where they can make, experience, and enjoy directly.”
