Vatican to Start Vaccinations This Month... Entire Population of About 500 Residents Eligible for Vaccination
Pope's Vaccination Status Not Confirmed
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Vatican, the global headquarters of the Catholic Church, has also begun COVID-19 vaccinations.
On the 2nd (local time), the Vatican City State health authorities issued a statement saying that the COVID-19 vaccines arriving during the second week of this month are expected to be administered in earnest from mid-month. They explained that the procured quantity is sufficient for all residents within the Vatican to be vaccinated.
The Vatican is the smallest country in the world, with an area of 0.44 km² and about 500 residents including clergy and religious members. Although specific vaccine information was not disclosed, it is known that the Pfizer vaccine, which was first approved in the UK and the US, is highly likely to be used.
The vaccination site has been designated as the "Paul VI Hall," according to Vatican News, the official media of the Holy See. The Pope's vaccination status has not yet been announced.
Earlier, in October last year, a cluster infection occurred within the Swiss Guard, who provide close protection to the Pope, and two cardinals affiliated with the Holy See, who are close aides, tested positive, causing concern for the Vatican health authorities.
