Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation Produces Video Content for 'OnDream Textbook Concert'
Can Be Used as Teaching Video Material with Added Commentary
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] The Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation announced on the 31st that it has started distributing free video content of the ‘2020 OnDream Textbook Concert,’ which adds commentary to classical music performances included in middle and high school music textbooks, co-hosted with the Ministry of Education.
Since 2016, the foundation has regularly held youth concerts across various regions nationwide through the ‘OnDream Culture Love Day’ project, providing opportunities for young people in small and medium-sized cities to enjoy culture and the arts. From 2016 to 2019, under the baton of conductors Geum Nan-sae, Yeo Ja-kyung, and Hong Seok-won, the foundation offered classical performances with age-appropriate commentary to over 26,000 youths in collaboration with the Hankyung Philharmonic Orchestra.
This year, due to difficulties in holding live performances amid the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the foundation produced video content for the ‘OnDream Textbook Concert’ focusing on classical music included in middle and high school music textbooks. The content is divided into six chapters (piano, strings, woodwind & brass, art songs (vocal), opera (vocal), orchestra) and made available through the Ministry of Education for use as audiovisual teaching materials in music classes nationwide.
The production involved pianist Kim Kyu-yeon (professor at Seoul National University College of Music), who performed Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Hankyung Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kim Kwang-hyun, the principal conductor of the Wonju City Symphony Orchestra, and baritone Jung Rok-gi (professor at Hanyang University College of Music), who performed Schubert’s ‘Erlk?nig’ in the art song chapter. Music columnist Ryu Tae-hyung provided commentary on the composer’s life, the background of the compositions, and the instruments used, making the content suitable for learning music history and as video material for liberal arts classes. Additionally, OnDream cultural arts scholarship students from the foundation also participated in the performances, adding further significance.
Furthermore, the Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation was recognized for its contributions to cultural and arts career education for students and its prompt response to COVID-19 by producing music video content usable in music classes, receiving the Minister of Education Award.
Kwon Oh-gyu, chairman of the Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation, stated, “Although it is regrettable that we could not offer live performances to youths due to the spread of COVID-19, we are pleased to provide the best music video content online to support students in line with the original educational purpose. We will continue to strive to keep the cultural and arts sector warm during these frozen times.”
