A new scene brought about by the COVID-19 era. Classes and joint projects are connected through online networks.
Dongmyung University explained the background of this class attempt. “It is possible to develop world-class software capabilities through international cooperation and to carry out projects without having to travel to distant locations.”
At 10 a.m. on December 29, Room 304, Building 8, Dongmyung University. Eleven students from the university’s Software Convergence College and ten students from the Computer Science Department of California State University formed one class. In addition, a total of 26 people including professors from both universities and students from Korea and the U.S. held a ‘ZOOM meeting.’
They have a ‘Global Software Education’ course on the latest web technologies via Zoom for four weeks from January 5 to 29 in the new year. A preliminary meeting was held on this day.
First, students and professors from both countries introduced themselves. A common expectation and confidence expressed was that “it will be possible to acquire world-class advanced software capabilities without having to endure the hardship of traveling long distances with much time and cost.”
This Zoom-based software education and collaborative project between Korean and American university students shows a new trend of ‘global untact cooperation’ accelerated by the COVID-19 era.
With the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the use of Zoom is evolving beyond a simple meeting tool to global Zoom learning.
This education will be conducted over four weeks from January 5 to 29 next year. In the morning, students will learn the latest web technologies such as HTML, Node.js, TypeScript, and Angular from a web technician at the U.S. IT company Bay Valley Tech. In the afternoon, students from the two schools will form teams and collaborate on projects.
To promote this new model of global software talent development education born in the untact era due to COVID-19, an opening event will be held at 9:30 a.m. on January 5, the first day.
Dongmyung University Vice President Park Nam-gyu, California State University Dean (Dr. Evans), international exchange directors of both universities (Dr. Caudill, Kwon Jung-rak), Bay Valley Tech CEO, and Dongmyung University Software-Centered University Project Director will deliver congratulatory speeches.
During this period, two professors from California State University and Dongmyung University will provide mentoring. To share information and experiences about global employment and entrepreneurship with Dongmyung University students, weekly Zoom special lectures will be held every Wednesday with Korean senior engineers in Silicon Valley such as Amazon’s Kim Hoon, Google’s Kim Jae-bong, LinkedIn’s Cho Sung-joo, and Nutanix’s Park Jae-kwon. Professors Lee Kang-hyuk and Cho Mi-kyung from the Department of Game Engineering will provide interpretation support.
Jeon Kwan, a third-year student in the Department of Game Engineering at Dongmyung University who participated in the Zoom introductory meeting, said, “I will overcome my fear of English and improve my software skills and confidence by learning the latest web technologies and participating in team projects with American university students.”
Professor Cho Mi-kyung, director of the Dongmyung University Software-Centered University Project, said, “This will be a pilot and innovative educational model for nurturing global software talent in the untact era and will be the starting point for training Dongmyung University students as global software talents.”
