[Asia Economy, Reporter Ryu Jungmin, Reporter Son Sunhee] On December 30, President Moon Jae-in nominated Kim Jinwook, a senior constitutional researcher at the Constitutional Court and a former judge, as the inaugural chief of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO).
On the morning of December 30, Kang Minseok, spokesperson for the Blue House, announced during a briefing at Chunchugwan, "On December 28, President Moon Jae-in nominated Kim Jinwook, senior constitutional researcher at the Constitutional Court, as the final candidate for the CIO chief among the two candidates recommended by the Recommendation Committee for the Chief of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials." He added, "The nominee, Kim Jinwook, will go through a confirmation hearing at the National Assembly and is expected to be officially appointed."
Regarding the nomination of Kim, President Moon stated, "After lengthy discussions in the National Assembly, a candidate for the CIO chief was recommended. As I have now nominated the final candidate as the inaugural CIO chief, I ask the National Assembly to cooperate so that the confirmation hearing can proceed smoothly as stipulated by law, enabling the swift launch of the CIO."
A key Blue House official explained the background of Kim's nomination, saying, "President Moon has previously stated that the significance of launching the CIO lies in the promise to the people to conduct thorough investigations and oversight of power-related corruption, to maintain checks and balances among powerful institutions, and to move toward a corruption-free society."
The official continued, "Both candidates recommended by the National Assembly were excellent. However, Kim Jinwook was judged to possess expertise, balance, and capability due to his diverse legal experience as a judge, lawyer, senior constitutional researcher, and special investigator for the special prosecutor. This is why he was ultimately nominated, as he has worked to uphold the intent of the law, democracy, and constitutional values."
