Next Year Local Government Officials' Salaries Up 0.9% ... Monthly Allowance of 50,000 Won for COVID-19 Medical Staff
Approval of the Amendment to Local Public Officials' Salary Regulations and Other Matters at the Cabinet Meeting
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Next year, local government officials' salaries will increase by 0.9% compared to this year, while allowances will be virtually frozen.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 29th that the revised versions of the "Local Government Officials' Salary Regulations" and the "Regulations on Local Government Officials' Allowances, etc.," which include improvements to the treatment and allowance system for local government officials in 2021, were approved at the Cabinet meeting.
The revision raises salaries by 0.9%, considering factors such as boosting morale among local government officials and inflation adjustments. However, in light of difficult economic conditions, political officials such as heads of local governments and officials at grade 2 (or equivalent) and above have agreed to return the entire 2021 salary increase.
Allowances are virtually frozen, with only slight adjustments made to essential allowances.
To improve the treatment of medical personnel working at COVID-19 screening clinics and similar locations, a new provision was established allowing a monthly allowance of 50,000 KRW to be paid to officials directly engaged in medical duties during a Level 1 infectious disease outbreak.
Additionally, the standard for family allowances for temporary fixed-term officials was improved from being proportional to working hours to full payment, promoting fairness.
