This project is a basic plan establishment service for the systematic management and preservation of Geoyeolsanseong, designated as a national historic site, and to secure budgetary evidence from national and provincial funds. It has been carried out by the Gyeongnam Research Institute’s History and Culture Center since September.
At the report meeting, Go Min-jeong, director of the Gyeongnam Research Institute, proposed a basic plan covering five areas as a foundational step for the preservation and maintenance plan of Geoyeolsanseong: cultural heritage zone management plan, comprehensive maintenance plan, academic investigation plan, facility maintenance plan, and cultural heritage utilization plan.
Regarding the establishment of a maintenance plan for the fortress ruins, basic directions were also presented, including preservation of the original form, maintenance based on fundamental principles of cultural heritage protection, and maintenance plans for historical education and cultural tourism.
County officials offered various opinions on land acquisition within the cultural heritage zone, annual project cases related to comprehensive maintenance of historic sites in other cities and counties, maintenance of trails and hiking paths, and restoration methods for the fortress walls.
Geochang County Governor Goo In-mo requested that plans for utilizing the Geongyejeong pavilion and the lower spring area also be prepared as part of the Geoyeolsanseong preservation and maintenance basic plan, stating, “We will do our best to preserve and maintain Geoyeolsanseong, a representative cultural heritage of our county, to establish its historical value and importance, and to utilize it as a resource for historical education and cultural tourism.”
