Mapo-gu Plants 810,000 Trees This Year... Achieves 172% of Annual Goal of 5 Million Trees
Launched the First '5 Million Tree Planting' Project by Local Governments in the 7th Civilian Administration...Exceeded Early Year Target of 470,000 Trees by 340,000, Achieving 172% of Goal
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) announced that it planted a total of 810,000 trees this year through its 5 million trees planting project.
This is 340,000 more than the initial target (470,000 trees), reaching 172% of the goal.
Since the launch of the 7th local government administration in 2018, the district has been operating the '5 Million Trees Planting' project, the first of its kind among local governments, carrying out greening projects to transform the entire district into a green city.
Planting 5 million trees across the district is one of the key projects aimed at improving residents' quality of life by reducing fine dust, mitigating urban heat island effects, and enhancing urban aesthetics.
The district stated that, in addition to the number of trees planted before 2018, it has planted 150,000 trees in 2018, 420,000 trees in 2019, and 810,000 trees this year, totaling 1.97 million trees so far (39.5% of the 5 million tree goal).
To achieve the tree planting goal, projects are being promoted in four areas: community tree planting, expansion of street greenery, expansion of park green spaces in residential areas, and private-led tree planting.
In particular, to protect youth sensitive to fine dust, the district is creating school forests in all schools within Mapo-gu, greening apartment side walls, creating mobile parks, establishing green shade forests, and distributing companion trees for fine dust reduction to households, among various distinctive projects.
The 5 million trees targeted by Mapo-gu are evaluated to have the effect of ?purifying the fine dust emitted by 16,000 old diesel vehicles over one year ?reducing the heat emitted by 4 million air conditioners (15-pyeong size) over 5 hours ?supplying oxygen that 3.5 million adults can breathe for one year.
The district installed a status board in the lobby on the first floor of the district office in May to allow residents to easily check the current status of the ongoing tree planting project.
The status board provides information such as the number of trees planted so far, the achievement rate against the 5 million tree goal, and the amount of fine dust and carbon reduction provided by the planted trees.
