The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Kim Seok-jun) announced on the 21st that it has developed the nation's first Internet of Things (IoT) textbook for high schools to strengthen future core competencies in preparation for the AI era.

This textbook is an elective subject in the high school information curriculum. Starting from 2021, all high schools nationwide can use it as a regular course depending on the school's choice.

The textbook was developed over about two years with the participation of Kim Ho-won, a professor in the Department of Information and Computer Engineering at Pusan National University and a member of the Busan Eco Delta Smart City National Pilot City General Planning Team, who is an authority in the IoT field; Professor Jang Yang-ja of the IoT Research Center (a member of the Presidential 4th Industrial Revolution Committee); and middle and high school information and computer teachers.

The textbook is composed of four units: ▲Concept of the Internet of Things ▲Composition of the Internet of Things ▲Internet of Things Services ▲Creating Services Using Internet of Things Technology.

Among these units, the concept unit covers how the Internet of Things is applied in our lives and what changes it can bring in the future.

The composition unit introduces core IoT technologies such as sensors, devices, services, networks, and platforms.

The unit on creating IoT services includes IoT technologies used in our surroundings such as transportation, environment, agriculture, and industry.

The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education plans to organize and utilize this textbook as part of the curriculum for high schools operating AI convergence education courses and leading schools in SW and AI education.

Superintendent Kim Seok-jun said, “The IoT textbook developed this time is expected to help students living in the AI era develop future core competencies,” and added, “This textbook will be very helpful in operating the information education curriculum in high schools.”
