[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Regarding reports that a new variant of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is spreading mainly in the southeastern region of the United Kingdom, the quarantine authorities stated that "further research is needed to determine the specific impact."
On the 20th, the Central Disease Control Headquarters explained in a briefing material, "While analyzing the rapidly spreading COVID-19 outbreak around Kent City in southeastern England, the variant virus was confirmed in more than 1,100 people," adding, "Currently, it is judged that the variant's impact on virus characteristics and clinical symptoms is minimal, but specific effects such as transmissibility and infection reproduction number are believed to require follow-up studies."
The Central Disease Control Headquarters defined the virus mutation itself as "multiple mutations occurring in the spike protein," and said, "According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 'Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data' (GISAID) analysis, among these, the change of the 501st amino acid from asparagine to tyrosine, deletions at positions 60-70 and 144-145 may be related to the virus's structure and function."
